Movie Review: New In Town

200px-New_in_town It seems like I’m becoming a homebody lately.  I don’t go out during weekends that much anymore and I usually just laze around the apartment.  I even just eat one meal during weekends to show you how lazy I really am.

In any case, one lazy Saturday afternoon, I got tired of playing facebook games that I turned to one of my old pastimes of watching DVDs.  The movie I watched is New In Town.  This movie is about a Miami high-powered executive who was unintentionally volunteered to leave her perfect lifestyle to move to a hick-town in the middle of nowhere to head their company plant.

Most of the people in this town knows everybody and more or less work in the plant.  The executive arrived in freezing weather with a freezing reception from the plant workers.  She had to worm her way through the people’s heart by being one of the boys, attending fairs and joining clubs.  Of course, the first guy he was introduced with was a handsome, young, single father who happens to be the union rep of the plant.

It’s a story which features family, friends and small-town happenings that’s quite endearing.  It’s a nice respite from sex, violence and people breaking up.  Back to the story, after she won the hearts of the people, their company plans to close the plant as it’s not profitable.  In one of her tapioca eating sessions after breaking the heart of her secretary, she came up with an idea using the tapioca recipe as a new product to sell.

The idea went well that they were able to stall the closure of the plant.  She went back to Miami and became a vice president.  After a couple of months, the company threatened to close down the plant again.  She went back to this small town and opted to buy the plant and become their CEO.   Her romance with Mr. Union Rep blossomed again.

The movie stars Renee  Zellweger as the Miami executive and Harry Connick Jr as the union rep.  Renee looks old here different from her Bridget Jones role.  This is a feel good movie with a nice touch of small town interactions.

Verdict:  3 out of 5 stars.    It’s ok to watch it once and when you don’t have anything to watch anymore.
